Hello all. I'm considering adding smart tabs, the "automatic" ones which you don't control from inside the boat and can't retract. If they're always down, how does it affect reversing?
If the trailer doesn't extend past the transom there would be no need to remove them.
If it does, then I don't think trim tabs would work out well unless you like getting wet.
The transom lines up with the rear of my trailer, so there is no contact with the SmartTabs; they stick out behind the trailer.
If you're boat sits forward on the trailer such that bunks (or rollers) are exposed behind the transom when the boat is loaded, you can always get a bracket that allows you to raise the SmartTabs when not in use. (Some people use these when beaching in extremely shallow water, too.)
I haven't noticed any difference with my smart tabs. Now I suppose if you had to run hard in reverse, as in an emergency avoidance maneuver, you could break the brackets.
