I have a 79 Fiber Form with a 228 Mercruiser alpha one /Gen one. I have installed a new lower shift cable, gimbal bearing, bellows and a new impeller. My issue is it shifts into reverse great ( That it didn't do before the new cable) now when it shifts into forward it does go into forward but it seems to take too far forward on the shifter so then the RPMs are a little higher then I would like. Also my shifter go's all the way forward so the top of the handle is at 6 clock. I have taken the shifter off and it all seems fine. I do have a few cracks in the outer plastic sheve of the cable

Move to Merc area
The shift cable needs adjusting

Place shift in neutral, then disconnect lower shift cable. Make sure **** interrupter switch is in center. Move cable in/out until until neutral is found on drive. Adjust barrel nut until cable just slides back on shift plate

The Merc area is the Mercruiser area. You had it in a section which would get very little views and being a shift issue it is a motor issue

It should help with that, but going all the way to 6 o'clock position may be other issues. Try adjust first then we can see if there are still problems
