hey guys,, i tryed to put my boat in reverse, it does not want to go in, what should i look for. its a merc I/O 4 cyl,,thx

A used out drive to replace it for about $1000 if not more , just joking, that is the worst case though for real.

Have you attempted to adjust the cables and are they moving freely?

You need to check the lower shift cable. When they get corroded, you lose the ability to put the outdrive into reverse. The easiest way is to pull the outdrive and turn the shift yoke to the reverse position and see if it engages. If so, replace the lower shift cable and inspect the shift bellows for holes or cracks and replace it if you find any.

I recommend a manual for replacing the lower shift cable. It is not a staight forward procedure.

The year of the engine will determine what manual you need....
Pre '91 should be Gen 1, manual #6.....​
