Rev limiter

Can someone educate me on a rev limiter question? I rarely ever run WOT but I’m considering a re-prop so I’m trying to get a baseline with current set up. So here’s the question: what does the rev limiter on a 2002 5.0 MPI do? What does it sound like? In other words how do I know when it activates? Also at what RPM will it activate? My range is 4600-5000 so should I expect it to trigger at anything above 5000? I have seen 5100 in the past with no indication of a limiter kicking in so also wondering if tach is accurate. Thanks for the help.

the rev limiter on the MPI motors is about 5200 RPM if memory serves.

it will cut fueling and spark and the motor wont be able to go any higher

most likely your tach is no where near accurate. the standard gauges in boats are merely a suggestion.

Rev limit is 150 above the top of the recommended range. so for mine with a recommended range of 4400-4800, the rev limiter is at 4950. And it cuts fuel and spark to half the cylinders until the revs fall below the limit.

Hi. Mine limits at approx 5150 rpm. Just about exactly that shown on the accurate smart craft. Same engine.

Your engine probably has a 4600-5000 recommended rev range....

Do an ECU data dump, you'll find the rev limit setting there. (Here's mine, note the recommended 'prop' revs and the limit revs.)

It does Chris. The range is 4600-5000 rpm. But the limiter is certainly at 5150 rpm
