This may be a super stupid question, but I have looked for days. I have a 1988 21 foot bayliner that needs the transom and middle stringer replaced. My first idea was to separate the top from the hull but that isnt going to work. I've tried and tried and gave up on that idea. So my deck is in good shape but I need to cut the peice out to get to the stringer and the transome. My question is, can I fiberglass the deck back in that I cut our or do I need to rebuild it from the ground up?

If i can build a platform under the deck to stabilize it, while tabbing in new fiberglass I dont see why i couldn't. Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong. What's the correct answer.

Thanks

There is no right or wrong. It all depends on your skills. There have been partial deck replacements where the trouble below deck is in an isolated area. Obviously, a full deck replacement is going to be stronger than a patch, but it is a judgement call that you are going to have to make.

The big question is if in fact the trouble below deck on your boat is as isolated as you say. You should be able to determine that when you cut open the deck to go after the suspect stringer. Make sure you look really well at the other stringers and cross members to see if they need attention.

Post some pictures for more comments. . . we like pictures :)

lots of deck- over bayliners. They were/ are cool looking boats in the 80's-90's but they about rotted from the factory.. What lies beneath may be of a surprise

I'm in the boat for $250 with motor and trailer. I've already gotten the motor running pretty well. Worst comes to worst I have to rebuild the entire deck and replace all the wood underneath the deck.. I'm sure there are some issues under the deck i cant see.

However it would be alot cheaper not having to rebuild the deck. So if i can cut it out and support it and fiberglass it back in, i think that's the way to go on this project.

Well then Good Luck with that approach.
An Ole' Okie told me once...................................."It's your boat you can do what you want."

I would try to pull the whole cockpit tub myself. would require you to crawl in the bilge to cut rotten stringers, etc. then flip the tub over to clean up.

Why is it we never seem to have the time or the money to do things right the first time, but we always have both the second time??? I wonder!!!!
