Go to the autoparts store and get some 1/32 or 1/16" gasket material---it should be felpro black stuff, not the rubberized cork. Try to keep the old gasket in good enough shape that you can use it to cut a pattern out of the new material. Use a single hole punch to get your bolt holes. I save a lot of money this way, and the time and aggravation of waiting on a gasket to get shipped just to finish my project--and I am impatient to say the least. It works good for intake gaskets, carb mount gaskets, exhaust cover gaskets, etc.
Good luck,
JBJ

Forgot about doing that. Thanks. I'm going to order a new head gasket and do it while it's apart. That and the exhaust cover are the only things that will come off the power head.:D

Where could I get a new set of decals? For paint I'm going to sand blast most of the parts. Then what paint would work? regular glossy white paint in a can work? Then a coat of clear from a can?

Ya' got access to a sandblaster, eh? --always wanted one. I have to ask, why are you taking off the exhaust cover and head gasket? Are they bad?
I've had good luck out of duplicolor spray paint. I've seen on the AOMCI site that a lot of people there have good luck with Duplicolor clear as far as protection for the paint from fuel and such. I have clearcoated the duplicolor and had good results. I like automotive clear because it's catalyzed and harder which is glossier and harder to scratch. Don't tell anyone, but I actually used walmart brand gloss black on my '72 9.8 mercury and clearcoated it and it came out great. I really don't have any idea where to get decals for all the sixties and seventies johnsons or mercs, although that nana's decals on ebay has a few for select motors. Also, make sure you use some self etching primer, preferably with zinc chromate on the lower unit or the paint will come off when you run it. And be sure to apply VERY thin cats with ample drying time between or you're out of luck. Boy, it sure is aggravating to finally get the paint just like you want it and then it peels off the lower unit during the first run.:( BTW, when can I borrow the sandblaster?:D

Oh, by the way, F-R says don't use the sandblaster on aluminum without special type of media or it'll pit the metal. And F-R KNOWS diddley!:)

It's a blast cabinet. Right now it has black buety in it. I did the lu as you can see and it doesn't appear to be pitted. It came out nice and smooth.:D

For taking the head and exaust cover off the exhaust cover leaks a little. For the head I want to clean out all the crap and corrosion out of the water jackets out. I'm shure there is stuff in there too because when I got it the water tube was packed with crap.:(

I don't think so. You need 2ea of OEM part # 306201. They were used until at least 1979, so they will be readily available from a J/E BRP dealer.

Do you know of a place online that would have it? Most the johnson/evinrude dealers are a good drive from me. So it's easier to get it online.:D

Sahara did I read somewhere that you are 16 years old? If so, you are
an impressive young man. Very intelligent. Correct me if I'm wrong about your age. I'm trying to learn as much as I can about older motors. I'm overwhelled by your knowledge for just a young man. Kudos to you.
Sorry for jumpin' the thread.
