Greetings all. I'm in the process of restoring my 1959 runabout. The transom is starting to go and I think it needs replaced. It's plywood inside and teak (maybe?) On the outside. I'm wondering if anyone here has replaced the transom on a similar boat. I've never done anything like this and I don't want to screw it up. Should I ratchet strap the sides of the boat so when I remove the transom it doesn't flex out? What would you suggest that I replace it with, keeping it looking like the original?

any help is appreciated.

Your going to have to DECAP the boat. The most economical is ACX,BCX and cdx plywood in that order of quality. Other grades are available like marine, composites etc. at 2x-3x the price for a reconstruction.
In addition there is poly or EEppooxxy to use for your glue.
Let the games begin. PICS,PIcs, pics . Measure everything 2x.

Looks just like the color photo. I know there's a plate on it, but it's at the marina. I just had the 59 Evinrude lark repaired. It's a jubilee edition.

It might be a Cambridge. The cap is all wood, has the split, and solid bench seat

I'm wondering if this is similar to my '56 where it was half fiberglass, half wood? If so, and if its anything like mine was, the transom is basically a fiberglass sandwich. The inside and outside of the transom were wood and the "core" if you will was the fiberglass hull. There was a thick wooden knee brace that ran down to the keel.

The transom appeared to be a very easy item to replace - never did it but I drew up plans and there wasn't a "cap" to remove to do it. Basically the "cap" were a couple of dimensional wood up to the closed bow. All was mahogany if I recall....or at least that's what we were told...

Bringing back memories of ours. We had back to back bench seats. Later on the metal supports gave up the ghost so be on lookout for metal fatigue.

Floor was a few thin sheets of plywood up on wooden risers. Had bolts embedded in the risers and brass/bronze t-nut looking hardware to hold the floor to the risers.
