Replacing transom on aluminum Jon boat

I inherited this aluminum Jon boat and want to replace rotting wood transom. I have the tools but lack the experience. I have an idea on how to go about completing the project but wanted to see if anyone, who has some experience, might offer any tips or suggestions about how they would do the job. Thanks in advance everybody.

Do you think it’s possible to replace the wood without removing the corner caps as those are welded. I do have access to a welder and know how to weld it, but that was something I was trying to avoid.

NO

I do have access to a welder and know how to weld it,

see your local radiator shop, they can weld that up for about $50

i think if you remove that bottom channel, those side plates and plate where motor clamps on, you can slide down and out that plywood, use it as a template for the new one and just reverse the process. jmo

Pull the corner plates and cap. I just use plain plywood and put the resin to it. scrcew the top cap back on using a good sealant and bolt the corners back on. Good to go for another 20 years of abuse. By abuse I mean sitting in the elements uncared for. If it's always covered or shop kept, it will outlast you.
