I want to replace the impellor in my 2000 Mercury 125. After reading the manual several times, I still don't know if it's necessary to drain the lower unit before removing it. I just replaced the fluid last Fall (I know--I should have done the impellor then), and would happily skip the gear lube step if I can.

No, the impellor hasn't failed, and I have no over-heating problems. Just general maintenance.

No need at all to drain the L/U for an impeller change. There's an oil seal under the W/P base that prevent the oil to escape, but you don't have to go there.

Thank you! I suspected that to be the case.
