I am looking for a little help regarding the swapping out a 96 OMC 3.0 with a 93 Mercruiser 3.0

I have a local mechanic that will do it for $350, but would really like to do it myself and know my boat a little better....

I am somewhat mechanical but have never replaced a stern drive motor before. The 'new' motor is complete, so I am not using any of the parts from the old motor. I am pairing this motor with a Volvo Penta SX outdrive ( the stock setup with this boat was OMC engine/volvo outdrive) 1996 Sunbird Spirit 170

My biggest questions have to do with seperating the drive from the engine and while I have it out what to check for/replace . Also, while I have it apart, what-if any parts from the old motor I might need...

I have noticed that the alignment tool for these engines seem to be the same for all of the 3.0 gm variations-will my replacement motor mate up with the outdrive or will I have to swap any parts out? ( I know this will be obvious once I have the motor out-but am just trying to be prepared)

I am comfotrable with the cooling, electrical and fuel sytems-just not sure where to start when disconnecting and reconnecting the Drive to the motor....

Also, will I need any specialty tools other than the alignment tool?

Thanks in Advance..!!

That's 1 of the places you're going to have Problems with........
While the bare Long Block is the Same,......
The Mercruiser "Stuff" just Won't marry up to the Volvo. or OMC drive.......
