Ok so hopefully this is my last question before I install the impeller. I was looking over the parts again today notices on the larger hole gasket that it has a glue strip on one side. So my question is, The the glue strip go against the Face Plate or the Water Pump body. I have attached a picture of what I'm asking about.

It will only fit on the drive one way.

Yep...what Don said...it only fits one way...I wondered the same thing for a minute or two when I was doing mine...I found the whole procedure a pretty simple fix...much simpler fix then I expected...lol...

Ok got it installed thank you for all your help. Not sure if I should post that here or create a new thread. Anyway her is my question.

I do have a question about the refilling the gear lube. I have on the engine a gear lube reservar. When I drained the drive the reservar emptied as well. So I pumped in a quart from the bottom and nothing came out of the top vent. So I guess I need more. So how much do I need? But then I got to thinking about filling the reservar. Whats the best process. I read the service manual and it to pump in from the bottom until you get to the bottom of the vent hole. With the drain plug in fill the reservar until it comes out of the vent then fill the reservar. That process seems like a pain as you would need 2 people.

Now if I have the pump in the drain and put the vent plud in, remove the cap from the reservar and pump until I get good amount in the reservar.

Once at the vent hole, screw the vent plug in while still pumping and once the bottle is about half full, remove the fill hose, put the fill screw in then top off the bottle.

Make sure the cap is off the bottle before starting.

Need 2 quarts with the bottle....more if you're like me and tend to fumble the fill screw and lose more than you want....

You drained the drive still on the bell-housing....

I drain my drive sitting on my bench. When I come to re-fill, I fill as per the instructions, but still on the bench. Put the drain and vent screws in, then lay the drive on the floor with the vent screw up. I then remove the vent screw and carefully fill the drive all the way up. Screw in the vent plug, fit drive to the boat and have fun, without having to worry about losing oil from the reservoir as the air burps out for the next 3 months.... :D

Yes I did. That's what the manual says to do. Didn't know there was another way to do it. I drained the drive and removed it. Took it to the work bench to work on it came back to the boat and found a puddle of gear oil. The oil had drained from the reservar. So how would I have stopped that? I'm open to new ways to change the oil. I like the way you drain and fill the gear oil. If you can give some pointers on keeping the oil in the reservar what would be great and I will attempt a the end of the season.

Just seems like it had not all drained out before you removed the drive. It will drain from the bottle to the lower and out the fill hole.

You might get just a little oil dribble out but should not be much of a puddle.

If you had the drive raised all the way up (which puts the fill at the lowest point), took off the bottle vent cap, then removed the fill screw, then removed the vent screw and waited for it all to drain, that should have been it.

Re: Replacing Impeller on Alpha 1 Gen II

Thanks. I did not have the drive up all the way, I had lowered it about 2 inches so it was closer to the drain bottle. The oil seemed to have stopped as it was only dripping very little. I never took the cap off the reservar. So I guess when I removed the drive it allowed it to completely drain. Next time I will have to do it differently. So for now, I will fill it up to the vent then put the vent plug in remove the cap and pump the oil up until the reservar is 1/2 full.

I do have a question. In order to have the best chance of getting all the oil out, what is the best position to have the drive. Full up, full down, or somewhere in the middle.

a1g2 with lube monitor it is trimmed all the way up/out.
Take a read of the manual starting on 1b-11 for checking oil then 1b-12 starts the procedure.

Once it appears to be drained completely, I exercise the drive up and down a few times just to see if any more comes out then as the procedure shows, leave the drive down for refilling.

Ok so my real questions was what is the best way to get all the AIR out. Sorry for the typo. I read have all oil out and 1 quart installed. So looking at manual it says full down/in to refill.

Re: Replacing Impeller on Alpha 1 Gen II

That is correct having it down in.

By pumping from the bottom (fill) hole you will be pushing the air up and out; first the vent hole then the bottle.

You need to have the drive down, and the cavitation plate level (or close to it) when filling. If you have it up too high you WILL trap air in the lower and not get it full of oil.
