I need to replace the impeller on my 2003 Alpha 1 Gen II. There seems to be a good video on the Web on this I just wanted to know if this was correct or if the video is missing some steps, or if things can be done better. I did notice in the video that the person did not use the alignment pins. But instead put the impeller in the aluminum housing and then placed the impeller and housing on the shaft. Also the person in the video used WD40 alot. Will that eat away at the impeller?

Thanks Don. But how about the us of WD40 to help get the impeller in?

WD40 won't eat the impeller, but KY Jelly is better for the environment. (and a good conversation starter when people see it in your toolbox)

I don't watch the videos. Most just use dish liquid. Some oils can actually damage the rubber in the impeller.

Waterdowg...I just replaced mine in my 2005 this weekend...tried doing it without the pins but proved too difficult...I took bolts to Lowes...matched threads up to some longer bolts...brought home...cut heads from bolts with bolt cutters and had instant pins...it worked great...did not need any lube to get impeller blade in housing...just make sure you get long enough bolts to use as pins...

Thanks. I was thinking of doing the same thing with gettting bolts from HD or Lowes. To buy the pins would be a waste, I'm sure I will loose them by the next time I needed them. But If I put the impeller in the housing then slip it on the shaft do I need the pins?

Not sure about that, I didn't try it...I was in no hurry so I just pick up the longer bolt to act as pins cuz I figured I would use them again. After seeing the shape my old impeller was in, I figured I would be checking it every season just to be safe.

Might want to have a good read of the attached document Don put together that shows you do NOT put the impeller in the housing first.
You put the impeller on the shaft then the housing goes over it while turning the shaft. A little dish soap on the impeller and the housing will help.

Yes, get the bolts/pins for sure.

As I also have a Bravo water pump that you have to put the impeller in by hand, I found letting the shaft on an alpha do the work was easier and made sure the fins were the right way than me doing it by hand and wondering if they were the right way even though I checked it 4 times:facepalm::facepalm:

Doesn't matter... Even if you put it in the wrong way. The long vane impellers just flip over the first time you turn the engine... No harm done. Think about when you put the drive back on, you turn the propshaft CCW with the drive in forward. That turns everything backwards, and flips the impeller blades over... Then you start the engine, and the blades go back the right way... :D

Guess I confused you there mate with the wording of my sentence; see how it starts with me mentioning about the Bravo? I was talking about my Bravo water pump where that has to be installed by hand which of course with a Bravo, has nothing to do with a propshaft or what gear it is in since it is engine mounted and driven by the pulley. That's why I indicated the alpha is easier to me as turning the shaft while pushing down on the soaped-up housing over the guide-pins was a piece of cake.

Now if you're also saying that for a Bravo all the vanes can be pointed the wrong way and somehow they will all turn the right way when the engine is cranked, that is new-good information I did not know.

Sorry Mark... I was only referring to Alpha (gen IIs)... As I know you did have an Alpha I thought the information was relevant...

Most people couldn't tell you as they use OEM for only a few $ more. Why risk damage to the engine and drive to 'save' so little? Or if you must save, why not use the on-line store you're asking for advise on? (and it's cheaper)

Thanks for the link Chris. I was not planning on buying online, I was planning buying from my marina. I support my local small business. I was just wondering if there was a difference in quaility over aftermarket and OEM. I do have question, is QuickSilver the OEM?
