Replacing Head Gasket on 1988 40 HP Evinrude

Was wondering what I should torque the 10 bolts to when replacing the head gasket?

Should I use any sealant on the gasket or bolts?

What would be a reasonable compression PSI upon checking compression?

Go to your local library and get a manual for your engine. It will have the torque specs in it. You might also do a search here with the search feature on head bolt torque. I don't use any sealant. Just make sure that the surfaces are clean and flat. You may want to take a sheet of very fine grit emery paper and slide your head over it to make sure that all of the surface gets a few scratches on it. Compression usually is around 100 but the main thing to watch for is that both cylinders are within 10% of each other. Obviously, if your compression readings are low then it is time for other action. Welcome to iboats.
