So I am getting ready to install my new stringers and engine mounts but I have no idea what the old engine mounts looked like since when I went to remove the old ones there was pretty much nothing left but saw dust and wood chips.

this is what it looked like before I opened up the fiberglass.

now my questions is does the mount have to be from the bulkhead to the transom (#1 in the image below) or can it be a smaller piece like #2 in the image. Also does it need to be attached to the stringer? And if i can go with option #2 do i have to glass the whole thing closed like before or just the mount and stringer because that will make oil changes and any other work on the motor a lot easier. The motor that's in it is a 4.3L Mercruiser.

Looks like your setup is exactly how mine was. i opted to make the small inverted U shape mounts. Only suggestion I have is make sure you have accurate measurements for the height...I thouht I did till I went to mount the motor temporarily for the trip to LA from PA...I will end up adding another 1.5" to mine...

Option #2 will work. Attach it to the stringer. Lay a 2x4 across the top of the boat and measure down to the top of the mount to determine the proper height of the mount so you can ensure it's the same when you build the new one.

mbison, I just finished mine and went with the small block arrangement you have sketched in your last picture. I think the small space gives you a little more room.

I just went through your rebuild thread and it answered a lot of questions i had. your boat is very similar to mine. Thanks for that great thread :)
