How thick should the aluminum be for fence siding ?
I tried the roll from H D and it raddles like crazy
What I have needs 19 inches high and some panels would be 12 ft long , this could be spliced
The Metal supply has a sheet of .24 that is 4'x10' and I'm sure they can cut this down for me

Re: replacement siding

I replaced my corner panels Mostly for looks but also to protect the boat from dock damage, I use my boat in the Chesapecke Bay and it gets pretty rough at times with those big ships sailing by ,so I used Diamond Plating, It's not that expensive a 29x49 sheet is less then $50.00 and I used pop rivets to hold them in place. The Diamond plating is Aluminum. It's very light but also very strong.

Pontoon.jpg

Here is what I did. 22 Gauge Aluminum Diamond Plate and for the top i used valley flashing for a roof and had it lined with black vinyl. All riveted in place with Aluminum rivets.

Re: replacement siding

I was looking at going with FRP from Lowes or HD. You can pick up a 16' x 4'sheet for $32.00. I am going smooth side out and painting it a color to match the new interior seating I will be ordering in the spring. I was going to use some aluminum strapping to hold it in place, and just put it on the outside of the railing for a clean and smoother look, maybe adding some graphics as well. I am going that way for a few reasons, First you have some flex so the inevitable bump into the dock is not permanent and flexes back out, and secondly, I can paint it any color I want. Third if there are any issues, I can run to the local hardware store and the fix is done fast, quick, and cheap.

Re: replacement siding

I looked at using FRP on the inside of my rails. My only worry was that because it is pretty hard it could break. If a cooler got pushed into it or something as hard. Just food for thought.

Re: replacement siding

My concern would be in fastening it to the rails? Plastic expands and contracts a bunch - kinda like vinyl siding? If you don't allow for that with your mounting system, FRP may disappoint you? Mounting holes need to be slotted....

Re: replacement siding

I was actually going to use aluminum "J" railing, That way it will just slide into place and give a clean look with no visible signs of attachment, as well as give room for expansion and compression due to temperature changes.

Re: replacement siding

Did my rebild last winter and used FRP for the siding best thing I have done to the boat.
No more cheap aluminum sound
No more dents
No expansion or contraction issues at all. I opened up the old J channel built into the existing fencing about a third of the way and slid the FRP into place and taped the J channel backed down, looks like it grew there. boat was in the water 8 months I wipe the siding down with 303 when I do the seats no problems from the sun
BUT YOU MUST USE A COMMERCIAL GRADE FRP not the stuff you get from the hard ware store it dos not have enough PVC in it and it will crack when you roll in the corners,"I KNOW" found out the hard way. go to a drywall supply house they will have the good stuff

Re: replacement siding

Yeah, these threads die off quick sometimes, but here is a video that the site made where i bought my railings. The things he is pulling back with the welding pliers are the J channel. if you don't have it, i don't believe its worth adding. just rivet. The channel is actually part of the square tubing when its bent into the square shape.

Re: replacement siding

sorry but I dont have any good photos of my J channel but the video that bobbo268 posted is exactly what I have and did. I think you have 2 things to consider with the J channel you have found.
1 The channel is much wider then aluminum sheeting and it is going to rattle in the channel. I think it would work vary nice with FRP and look good
2 I would snap the rivets through the FRP and the J channel at the same time this would keep the head of the rivet on top and not under the FRP where it will make a gap between the frame and panel for water and dirt to collect
I am a big fan of FRP was uncertain at first because I couldn't find anyone that had done it. The only con would be that it is heaver then the aluminum I will guess that I added 80 pounds to the boat but on my try toon that wasn't an issue for use

Re: replacement siding

Going back to finding the correct gauge Aluminum sheets
Need to find it at a place that can cut 12' long X 19" high , most shops I have found only haqve a 10 ft shear
Not sure I want to try and cut this , I do have a table saw , plasma cutter , air shear, Jig saw , and other tools
If I try this what would be the best tool ? I'm thinking it would be about .030 inch thick Aluminum

Re: replacement siding

My stuff that I mentioned was used in the video was .030 thick and we started cutting it with electric shears and towards the end we found a razor blade made the best cuts. If you can makea straight enough line or find a 12' straight edge? Score it with the razor 3 times, each time with a new blade, then get some help and gently fold it at the cut until it snaps. I didn't think a razor blade would work either until we tried it... Then we wished we would have tried it sooner
