In need of some advice what is a good alternative to marine plywood Ive heard of people using a plywood made by arauco from lowe's just wondering if this is suitable for replacing a transom on a 14' skiff with a 30 e-tec

Welcome to iboats!

Is your boat aluminum or fiberglass? Depending on construction, the plywood is less stressed in the transom of an aluminum boat. However, whatever you use must have waterproof glue, and you should fully encapsulate it to prevent water intrusion.

BTW, I don't see Arauco plywood on Lowe's website. How does it compare in cost to regular exterior plywood and marine plywood?

Add this to your other thread rather than starting a new one. Cuts down on the confusion. A moderator can merge this for you.

this is what i used for my transom and deck coated in resin this is what is used during rough in framing of homes exposed to the weather uncoated..... would suggest a resin coating for good measure though

Hi 72seastar. What type/brand of resin are you using to seal your plywood? Got a link possibly? I've just finished fabricating the benches, decks and transom for my 14' aluminum boat, but I'm not sure what to finish them in. Some folks say epoxy resin, other say polyester. I've never used either so I'm not sure which to use. Are you then going to wrap it in fiberglass? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Yup, standard old plywood, theres a reason why its the most common transom material.

On a side note, get the best grade of plywood you can. Preferably warehouse kept, and not in some yard getting wet under a tarp.

this is the stuff i used except i didn't get if from ace i got it from lowes/homedepot/walmart i just coated the boards front back and sides with it until i was sealed tight so hopefully no water can get in. not sure if this is the way your supposed to do it but its working so far. stuff seems very tough to me like its never going to come off due to natural forces. (not without a sander or grinder)

The owner of a fiberglass boat repair shop told me, use a mix of 50/50 fiberglass
resin and acetone, brush it on all sides and the edges 2 timess. Hope this is some
help.

GOOD LUCK................HAS
