I first boat........

I made a purchase on a 1984 Bayliner Capri 1950 openbow. with a 2004 Kara trailer in excellent shape.
Got the boat and trailer for $340.00. boat is an Inboard with a Volvo Penta engine. and the guy had an extra outboard with it and three extra props. He couldnt get it to turn over and he bought a new boat.

Well.. i figured for the price i can make it my first boat and project boat... Got the boat home used my fathers extra battery to his boat and it started right up. Talked to a few of my fathers expierenced boaters and they looked at the engine and said it was in great shape and needs a few minor things but all very minor and the engine sounds and runs good.

The transom on the boat is in good shape no flex or rot..... Came across a spot on the floor in the rear of the boat approx 8 inches x 4 inches that is soft. Tore the carpet and this is the only rotted spot on the boat all the other wood is in good condition.

Want to just get this boat fixed up for now and in the water and do a complete restore over the winter. I read thigns on here about the bayliners floors, with this small spot is there a temp fix i could do for the time being but nothing permanent.

Any good webpages for materials or tools i would need.. And when i redue the floors i would like to redue the transome so i know its in great conditon but was unable to find any photos how to do an inboard transom..

Thank You

Check out either of Friscoboater's threads (Glastron transom and SeaRay total rebuild). They will answer any question you may have on how your boat is put together and what you'll need to address. As for a temporary patch, well we really don't do that here. Once you start tearing into it you're probably going to find lots more rot. If the boat is otherwise solid, I'd leave it the heck alone till I was ready for a big project. Throw a sheet of 1/2" ply over it or something till then.

agreed--you did very well to get on the water for $340. That "extra outboard" is probably worth that.

You get the advantage of running it for a season to see if it has any major problems, and if the size and style is right for you. If it does have issues, you can walk away. You can't rent a boat for a week for $340.

Starting a project now means you won't be boating for a month at least. have fun!
