I am repainting my boat completely just dont like the colors. i know i need to sand , sand it , and sand some more.... but i sanded for a long time and only have a 6" sanded. this will take months!!!!!!!!!! I am using a 6" dual action orbital sander on a air compressor. Is there a better way ? what about chemicals ? if so what kind ? after sanding is finished what next ? Primer ?epoxy primer ? this is my first time doing this so any help would be greatly apreciated.... what kind of paint should i buy ? where do i get it ? i want to be able to perfectly match the seats i bought from ******** also.

Your boat is prolly gel coated and you do NOT have to sand all the gelcoat off to paint the boat. First, wash the boat with a good degreaser, I like TSM (TriSodiumPhosphate, get it @ Lowes) Let it dry, Then ou only need to scuff the gelcoat and fill any scratches and gouges with a quality marine filler and sand them fair. Wash her down again with TSM. Then do a final wipe down with Acetone. Two coats of primer, wet sand between coats with 220 or 320 grit. Then 3 Coats of Color Wet sanding between each coat with 320 grit. All kinds of Paint to choose from. $1,000 paint jobs to $50 dollar paint jobs. Just depends on what you want. Check the link in my signature below for Painting your boat. Use photobucket to post some pics so we can see what you're working on.

Its TSP you goofnut oki from bistokie :D .. ;)

This is correct on washing down before you sand Icemun.

Has the boat been painted ?

If you want to match your colors then I would check into Imron ( from DuPont ). I would use a 2 part Epoxy primer prayed 3 layers in one application. Sand and prep. Then spray the Imron.

Woody is correct on NOT sanding down All of the substrate to achieve a primable surface.

Woody is also right about Pics .. We love them :) .. any and all information should be put up front so we as a group can help you out as best we can.

Are you spraying, or roll, and tipping with a brush?

Have you decided on the Brand of Paint yet. Each mfg has recommendations for final sanding grit befor primer. Most don't go above 320. I usually only go to 180 or 220.

No i havent decided on manufacturer of paint yet. Im still kind of clueless. I ordered seats from ******** a special package deal they had , with the lounge seats and jump seats. the colors were red and white, but it looks more like a wine color to me. the seats should arrive soon and i was thinking of taking one of the seats to a auto body shop and get them to match the color perfectly. would auto paint and clear coat work as good as marine paint with gelcoat ? or is there a company online i can order the paint from ( marine paint w/ gelkote ) and give them a code that i get from an auto body place to match the color perfectly ? im just afraid if i order red paint it will be bright red instead of the wine color im looking for.

would auto paint and clear coat work as good as marine paint with gelcoat ?

First, Paint and Gel Coat are two VERY different things. Gel Coat is more or less opaque tinted poly resin. Paint is, well, Paint. Auto paint and clear can be OK, But generally isn't as waterproof as a boat paint...

or is there a company online i can order the paint from ( marine paint w/ gelkote ) and give them a code that i get from an auto body place to match the color perfectly ?

Again, Marine paint doesn't have gelcoat in it. You will either be painting or gelcoating. There are companies that can match colors in marine paints- SuperMarine is one brand that does. If you use 'off the shelf' marine paints like perfection, etc, you're stuck with 'stock' colors... And there aren't that many. Others, like Imron and Awlgrip, have far more extensive color selections. You'll have to decide on a paint before you start priming, so you can make sure that the primer you use is compatible with the paint.
