Removing transom bolts Gen 2

How difficult is it to remove rusted mounting bolts on a Gen 2 transom assembly. I just bought a used unit and some need to be changed. Are they in with loc tight? Do the housing threads strip out easy making the housing useless? Six bolts are the only thing stopping the boat from sinking and weak worn threads/not perfect seems like a bad idea.

Bolts are available new if you are worried. If your talking about the bolts that hold the inner transom plate to the outer assembly, they should be nylock nuts

When installed correctly it will not lea and holds.

There are 2 sizes of bolts (Items 2 and 3) and are locktited in place. Will need some heat most likely to break them free easier

Ayuh,...... Bolts, or studs,..?? aluminum can corrode together,.... coating the threads with Perfect Seal helps stop that,....

If corroded, penetrating oil might be enough, if not, concentrated heat with Ox/Ac should work, just use a small tip,....

Careful use of a variable impact driver can also do wonders. It looks just like a heavy duty drill. Use Caution. If the Impact drill does break the bolt loose?
DO NOT EVER let the drill spin the loosened nut around !!!!!
The nut CAN ? WILL chew out metal under the nut. Been there and done that. Long ago. I now have a helper holding a box wrench. Or I tie and restrain the box wrench somehow.

What about stripping or partially stripping the threads on the housing. The aluminum is going to give before the stud. It it a real concern or does it not happen often

Follow Bondos advice - penetrating oil like Kroil, heat and some paitence.

yes of course it is a chance it can break or strip. If the aluminum thread gets messed up a helicoil or timesert thread insert can repair it

And I'd be prepared to give it several cycles of heating and then cooling down. Since the housing is aluminum, it should move much more than the studs.

Run tap through to clean internal threads. I purchased new bolt/studs and coated as best as I could. After assembling, coat lock nuts or use ss lock nuts. I don't plan on rebuilding another I/O transom!!!!
