The mini-basketball sounds like a good idea but I would suspect the only thing would happen is the trailer would rise up because of the leaf spring suspension. Even when it reaches the maximum on the spring the ball has a lot more give to it than the metal. Any sizeable dent on a curved surface takes some ummphh power to get it out. Since it's welded on I believe your only option is to remove the tire/wheel and chock the trailer securely and begin pounding out the dent from underneath. A dent puller is the other option but either way you're going to have a little body patch work, sanding, priming and painting to do.
