I have a 91 smokercraft. I'm redoing the floor and carpet and would like to remove the casting platform and extend the floor to the bow. I'll have to grind down the rivets holding the platform brackets to remove them. I'll need to then replace the rivets. How do I find the correct replacements?

Thanks
Steve

Hi Capt. Most folks drill them out and replace them with aluminum pop rivets of a slightly larger size. You can even dip them in a bit of 3M 3200, or JB weld just prior to installation. Here's a handy vid.

Your casting platform is a structural member of your boat, removing it will weaken your boat... in case you're interested.

+1. You should probably brace the hull first with a bit of aluminum angle, or flat stock, before you cut anything out, otherwise it may warp/flex as the deck is cut out. Be sure you replace any structural components when you re-engineer the layout too. Most folks use aluminum angle, or sealed, non-pressure treated 2 x 2's with sealed, non-pt plywood on top (1/2"-3/4") which is then mounted with either the aluminum rivets, or stainless steel self-tapping sheet metal screws.

I fish so a deck is important to me. Even if you are not a fisherman however, I'll only add that the deck, if setup properly can add a bunch of storage..

Re: Removing casting platform

After reviewing everyone's feedback I've decided against taking on the additional work. As it is I am in the process of replacing two layers of rotted wood and carpet, thanks to previous owners, and have completely gutted the boat to gain access. At this point I've started to turn the corner and am looking forward to wrapping it up shortly
Thanks for all the feedback
Steve
