Removing carbs on a Merc 650

I have a 1964 Merc 650 that came on a Duratech boat I just purchased. The carbs are going to have to come off to be cleaned. It looks like I may have to pull both the stater and distributor to get the job done. Any suggestions?

the aluminum bracket comes off the front of the motor

Thanks.....I had it off, but it still looks like I'm going to have to remove the starter and distributor to get at the carb nuts.
