I bought new control cables for my project boat. I have a 1973 115 hp johnson. I removed the cables from the boat but I can't seem to figure out how to remove the attachments to reuse them on the new teleflex cables. I read some advice on another forum and everyone states to unscrew the clamp screws with a screwdriver. As you can see in the picture, there are no indentions to even begin to unscrew them. The silver piece that I am assuming is the clamping scre, has a flattend side leading me to believe it is not supposed to spin. And the steel end doesnt seem to have any kind of clamping device.(Maybe crimped??)[

I'm thinking it's a one time use cable maybe?

(Maybe crimped?)

Re: Removal of control cables casing housing

I guess I had a brain fart when I was trying to get these off. These connections are from a 91 evinrude that was on the boat and I guess I just assumed they were interchangeable. When I got the boat there was no engine on it at all and it slipped my mind the cables were from a post 79 engine. I found the connection kit that I need, CA27247P, I am guessing I will need two of these for the shift and throttle cables. Please advise if this is wrong. The problem I am finding now is, this kit doesn't come with the connection for the actuall control end. In my original picture you can see the eye terminal used in my OMC controls. how do I go about addressing this? I found eye terminal connections but they are for the 3300 calbes and I have the 400 series.

another thing I noticed, on the back of the cables I bought, it shows for the OMC pr 79 engines a twin lever control.

Can I not do the omc single lever control with a omc pre 79 engine?

I took the engine off the boat today and finally got the rusty steering cable out. Still lost on what to do about the control end of the cable. Any advice?

Re: Removal of control cables casing housing

I think I figured it out. I ordered the universal 3300 cables and bought the pre 79 engine connection and the post 79 omc control adapter. I wish there had been a way to just use the 400 series cables I already had. I pretty much have the Teleflex catalog, cable section, memorized now. In the end, I guess this is exactly why I got a project boat. I am learning a lot along the way.
