Reliable Sure Lube Trailer Hubs Q

How much grease should these hubs take? Watched a youtube video and the guy had an automatic pump and he ran that for quite a while before the old grease started to come out. I just hand pumped a tube of marine grease in each hub, but no old grease came out. No idea of the maintenance schedule on this trailer as it's new to me. Need to pump more grease in there, or no?

Ok, found this... apparently, I'm past filling the hub and into the axle tube!

Bearing Lubrication - Grease

For units equipped with the Sure Lube or Bearing Lube greasing systems, the
bearings can be lubricated without the hassle of packing the bearings by hand.
After assembling the unit, simply apply grease through the grease fitting that is in
the end of the grease cap or spindle.

The following amounts of grease should be used:
• 5-7 ounces to completely exchange the grease throughout the hub
• 1 ? - 3 ounces every (6) months or 3000 miles thereafter or as use requires

Jac I replaced my axle this year with Tie Down 3500lb produce, spindles have grease zerc's. As for me, I pumped till old grease started coming out,,all depends on how much grease you have in there,,,also, often forgot is while pumping jack up the wheel off the ground and spin the tire while pumping,,, rotates grease better... that is recommended,, once your full,, every 2 or 3 dunks in the water give em a pump or two to make sure your full and water is out... good luck

I've had these on my trailer since new in 1999....no problems at all....I add 2 or 3 strokes of the grease gun whenever I launch the boat(especially in salt water)....I can see some of the old grease coming back out in my direction...if grease looked dirty or contaminated with water then I might continue pumping until clean/fresh grease starts coming back out in my direction. I consider these hubs about as good as you can get!....

my 20+ year old 30' trailer is as you describe.... I have regularly put several pumps in each of the 4 hubs over the last few years and have never had any come back out... who knows HOW much grease is in the axle tubes!

Last winter I took it apart with the intention of replacing the (original I believe) bearings... well the seals were junk but I couldn't find any reason whatsoever to replace the bearings so they got packed and replaced with 4 new seals...

OR better yet... if you have no idea how old they are, just replace em.... they cost me $3.00 each at my local rv dealer

remove hub cap, take cotter pin out, unscrew nut, pull hub assy off, pry out old seal, tap in new seal and replace assy...... set proper preload on bearing, install NEW cotter pin and replace hubcap.

I generally do it with a pair of channel locks and a screwdriver

Mine of an unknown age seemed really stuck. For fear of damaging the bearing I bought one of these:Seal Puller w/2 Tips though I recall doing this in the far distant past without one.

Thanks, smoke. How do you determine the proper bearing preload?

Tighten the axle nut finger tight while rotating the wheel.
Then LOOSEN the nut to the first position that allows the cotter pin to go in.
Grab the tire at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions and push/pull left/right.
You should feel a very slight "Tick" and see a very small amount of play. (<1/16")
Better too loose than too tight!

i generally tighten to about 30 fl lbs, then back off and tighten to snug and then back off till the cotter pin will go in... as mentioned above there should be very slight slack when done..... Preferably too little to see and just barely enough enough to feel.

feel how they are now before you take em apart to get an idea.... if you can't feel the slack, concentrate and keep at it till you "find" it

Thanks, I checked and didn't see any leaking grease from the wheel hubs on either side. So, I guess I'm good for now. On to other problems!
