Redoing face on console?

I am about to embark on a rebuild of most of the interior/decking/wiring of my boat and I'd really like to work on the console while it is out of the boat. One thing I hated about the console, was when I replaced the controls, there was a large cutout that was larger than the new control I purchased, so I had to cut a piece of starboard and bolt it on.

How feasible is it to re-glass the console so that I can have a solid smooth surface to work with? I believe you need to have backing board for the face to be sturdy enough right? Thanks!

Well, I kept looking around and found this video. Looks like I could use the same technique to fill back in the cutouts from the console. Hope this helps someone else too.

You can rebuild and fill the entire dash. A thin piece of plywood can be glassed over w/o too much problem. You can get creative and change the shape and gauge locations. Just be aware of how and where the steering is attached ..... the relationship of the gauges to the steering system.
