Red or not.

While recently reading about the Zebco purchase of shakspheare's fishing line division was reading about their Cajun Line. It is red and their claim is that red is the first color to disapear under water. O.K. That contradicts all the hype about red hooks and lures which claim to make the fish believe the prey is bleeding therefore hurt and easy prey. I have never tried the red hooks but know guys that swear by them. Does anybody know of any scientific research on this subject?

I've pondered the same thing. Lots of gimmicks out there, let the buyer beware. The only line that I have seen be anything close to invisible in the water is fluorocarbon. I have yet to catch any bass on a lure or worm that primary color is red. Don't know about the whole hook thing. Another gimmick if you ask me.

From SCUBA diving many years ago I would agree that red is the first color to turn gray underwater, but it doesn't happen until you get 8 or 10 feet down.

On the other hand I have caught a lot of fish on red and white Daredevls and red plastics as well as red surface lures.

never used a red rattletrap, flathead? try one this spring on your staging bass.

Scientific research? Sounds like a good one for Mythbusters.

"color disappears" isn't the same as the line disappearing. It's still opaque. Maybe it blends into the background from more than 3 feet away.

I like red hooks cause they match my rods - maybe I should try the red line, bet it'll be real purty. Now I mostly use blue line cause my boat is blue.

jtex hit the nail on the head....refractive rays penetrate the, although appearing red, the semi-clear line and does get harder to see. If it was solid red-like the hooks/other lures, it wouldn't be the same.
I use it on line-shy wallies and as JB said, it seems to be most effective at around 8ft and deeper (in clear water) stained water does not produce as much refraction of it's suroundings and is easier to see.
It IS a very strong, dependable line though. If the bite gets that tuff, I go to florocarbon anyway.

Never tried a red one, But I will give it a shot this spring. Never had much luck with the lipless cranks. Something I need to try more often.

Thanks

Re: Red or not.

I recently bought some 14# Cajun Line to try on a catfish outfit. I don't know if it turns invisible or not but I can hardly get it to break when I'm hung up. 20# Trilene is easy to break in comparison. I'm spending a lot less time re-tying rigs so I'm very happy with the red stuff. It looks nice on my reel too. MJ

all the perty colors are to attact sales not the fish. A red, pink and orange lure looks better than a grey one. Its all mosly gimmics. Red hook look good on my rod also thats why I buy them and yellow mister twisters match my boat.

True,, but not always the case. I use Powerpro High Vis.Yellow line on my jig and soft plastics rods. It stands out so well against the water (Above water where I see it). Even in low light it stands out. I can see every single little twitch of the line, when a fish picks it up I know it immediately. It really helps me with my hook ups on finicky bass. Mono or green colored line sometimes blends with the water color and you cant watch the line right. A fluro leader is a must with the stuff.

I found this out by accident a few years ago. I wanted powerpro and all they had was high vis yellow. I bought it thinking why am I buying bright yellow line, I must be nuts. Best thing I ever did.

No doubt there's a lot of lures designed to catch fishermen, but who has't caught fish on the most unlikely-looking contraptions? a spinnerbait, for example. Chartreuse is an incredibly productive color yet I've never seen any natural food that color. If red were really invisible, our lakes would be chock full of little red bait fishes, except I guess the bass would evolve whatever it took to see 'em.

I only know what a color looks like to me, but I know they look different depending on water clarity and lighting. Who knows what it looks like to a fish. In black & white, red looks like green..........

btw flathead, a lot of the fishermen I know (myself included) usually find the rattletrap hook points dull - I usually replace 'em. great lure, lousy hooks.

And I thought that I was the only one that did that!~ I love the yellow line for that very reason. 40# line and a 20# Fluro leader. Eyes ain't what they used to be!
