1987 120 V4 Bad Battery Cable = Stall??

I have a 1987 Evinrude 120 V4 that I recently bought and had run maybe 5 hours without any real problems until I was going full throttle for 10-15 minutes after a full day of boating and the engine slowly lost rpms and eventually failed to start again. After trying to start a few times, the starter didn't turn when I turned the key, so I tried the rope, it fired up and died after a few seconds. I was towed in and tried to get it started in the boatyard and eventually diagnosed the starter problem as a bad ground lead from the battery. I replaced the battery cables and the engine started alright. My question is: Could a bad battery cable (bad ground) cause the engine to die after it is already running?? It seems like too much of a coincidence that the starter stopped spinning right when the engine died. I want to know why the thing died before I go out again...even if it seems fine now.

P.S. I checked the plugs and fuel filter, and they both looked fine. All the plugs looked the same, so I don't think it is a problem with one of the carburetors...
