bought a boat 2 weeks ago, new to boating. I've took it out 3 times. On the 3rd time the boat ran crappy and smoked really bad. I noticed the fuel line with the prime bulb was leaking fuel. The motor would run and die, I would prime the bulb and fuel would leak out at the attachment to the motor. I noticed the motor was smoking really bad. Would this be because it was burning oil without enough gas? I'm having the fuel lines checked out and the prime bulb line replaced. My concern is all the smoke...any idea of what caused all the smoke? The first 2 times out the boat ran great. I'm taking it to a shop, I would also like to know what the range of a tune-up and lower oil change runs. Hourly rate for Tech? Thanks for any information.

the tune up will fix it, it could be a number of things:

1. Bad oil
2. Bad Gas
3. old gas
4. old oil
5. water in gas
6. water in oil
7. ash in oil
8. wrong type of oil (next time you mix your oil up put in the right amount of tcw3 and for every ounce of tcw3 oil add an ounce of regular motor oil, it will smoke like crazzy but when you go back to regular it will run great and it helps the rings :)
9. build up of carbon
10. fish blood in oil
11. fish blood in gas
12. the list continues...
13. dirty Motor (clean it, Orange clean works great!)
14. dirty semi inside (take cowl of and get a hose wash motor down around carbs (its ok to get a little water there  and the powerhead. just don't get the little circit boards wet if it has any.)

Hi, Joe.

I disagree with Sloopy's advice about adding regular motor oil.

Your problem is almost certainly the gas leak. Your oil injector pump kept right on adding oil, which made the smoke because your fuel mix became too oil rich.

I am one of those super-cautious guys who always disconnected the oil injector in favor of mixing my own. You might consider it.

The cost of a tune up, etc. will be too much. Why too much? Because the operations are so easy that most people with a modest tool chest and a good manual can do it, and they wont add a bunch of un-needed new parts.

Invest in a manual. It should be a factory service, manual from Johnson (or OMC) and it will cost under $35. It will pay for itself on the first job you do for yourself.

Good luck. :)

My '92 30hp Johnny had the same problem. It turned out to be the gas fitting on the side of the motor. It was worn out so it leaked fuel when I pumped the ball and it also sucked air. My motor would be hard to start, then when you get it started it would idle fine but when you accelerate it would sputter and die if I didnt decrease throttle. The demand for fuel was more than the leaky fitting could supply. If you want to eliminate the fitting just bypass it and hook your fuel hose directly to the intake on the fuel pump. If your problems correct themselves, then you know what to replace.

Joe, I'm assuming this motor is vro set-up. in that case with leak on fuel line it would likely suck air and cause fuel /oil ratio to run oil rich.the smoking is just that. It is running oil rich and should have no serious damaging effect to motor for single episode.I also agree with JB and would defeat vro and mix 50:1.After all anyone who likes boston whalers ...............

I thought it was the fuel leak, my boat is oil injected. It made sense to me that the oil continued to go to the motor without getting enough gas. I'm kinda intimadated by the fuel line. I don't want to rig it up wrong that's why I'm taking it to a shop. The shop charges 68 dollars an hour is that about right? I went to Walmart and purchased a new prime bulb but am scared to attempt to replace it. The shop charges 1 and 1/2 hours labor for the tune-up and prime bulb line to be replaced. Is that about right?

If you've got the money go for it, however fuel line maintenance and installation is something that you should get comfortable with if you're going to operate a boat. Not trying to be dis respectful or smart alec .Joe you can also buy complete line and hose assys. of various lengths which are literally a snap to install. If you want dealer to perform tune-up ,thats a good idea . iwould watch and learn if able ,or in the future obtain a manual .A lot of these procedures are fairly simple and moreover will familiarize you with your particular motor .When boating it's good practice for your own safety.

I had the same problem on my Johnson. I traced the leak to the hose that went to the fuel filter on the side of the motor. If yours is like mine, there should be a square or triangle plastic part with a slotted screw in the middle. Well, just before that is a hose connected to it. On mine, all it was was a zap strap that was securing it(which let air into it). My boat would idle fine, but the minute I went to increase the throttle it would want to die(or decrease in power, as The Fox had mentioned). I just replaced the zap strap with a new one and made sure it was snug in place. It only took a minute to replace.
Hope this helps.

All those save a buck tie wraps put on at the factory should be changed out to SS hose clamps . Especially since they have a perpensity to stretch and get loose with time on a system that can't afford fuel leaks . that's the first things that were changed on mine when purchased new.My fourth outboard.

Actually I do agree with ob. You should use SS hose clamps whenever necessary. I used a zap strap when I was on a boating trip and that is all I had at the time. :D

Sounds like you are starving for gas!
Replaceing fuel line and bulb shuld set you up! Unless there is a proplem with the attachent that the fuel line goes to. Either is very simple to replace. Try that first before shelling out the dough!
