I’ve run across info that says pre 2008 models should run on vds-3 or diesel 15w40.

Post in thread 'What Replaced Volvo Penta Full Synthetic SAE 30 Engine Oil?'
https://forums.iboats.com/threads/w...nthetic-sae-30-engine-oil.668787/post-4980864

pertinent statement from that post….
“All gasoline engines prior to 2008 were to use Volvo's VDS-3 Oil (Which is Volvos diesel specification, 15w40)
This would mean Oils such as, Rotella 15w40, Delo 15w40, Volvos own 15w40 etc are now the recommended spec also, also some have used Rosella Syn t6 5w40. I personally use Rosella 15w40.”

I do not think I need the synthetic, but want to use the correct oil.
Can anyone confirm that there was a service bulletin that recs. diesel spec oil for a 2005 5.0 Gxi

thanks

You're overthinking it

Buy the 15w40, or 20w50. Rotella or Valvoline or Pennzoil or mobile 1 or other.
Dino squeezings or synthetic

Just run a good filter

And go boating

In the 80s, it was SAE30

In the 90s it was 10w-30 or 10w40

In the 00s it was 20w50

In the 10s it was synthetic

All for a motor designed in 1952 for the 1955 model year

Thanks…do you recommend anything other than VP 3850559 for my filter.

And just so I’m clear, you are saying 15w40 and NOT the diesel spec. formula..

thanks

No, I am saying any of the oils. I buy Rotella T4 diesel for most boats with flat tappet cams, however also use it in many cars, trucks , etc. You can run any of the oils with your roller motor

You are over thinking it

I run Rotella T6 synthetic in mine, but have used Mobil 1 when I cannot find Rotella. I agree with others, you are overthinking. Oils have improved vastly since your engine was designed.

Most 15/40 oils are dual certified for both gas & diesel. If you have a roller camshaft the engine isn’t that fussy about oil the main issue is oil temperature & viscosity shearing after a long run on plane. If your oil pressure doesn’t drop below 20 psi after a run on plane & you’re not hearing lifter noise then the oil you are using is probably good enough. If you’re really curious do an oil analysis each season

Just make the 15W40 is gas rated. Some 15W40 diesel oils are not gas rated.

Look for the S-- rating that is for Gas, the C-- rating is Diesel

all this for a motor that was originally offered with an optional oil filter in 1955...... guys, you are over-thinking it on an SBC. any of the oils in the last 50+ years will work fine as long as the viscosity is over 5cSt at 100C

I’ve said this before but it’s worth repeating…if you have oil OCD like most of us can have sometimes do an oil analysis that will answer your question as to whether or not the oil you are using is adequate to protect the engine. It’s all about the difference in marine use vs automotive. Constant 3500-4000 rpm use is way different than automotive. Viscosity shear & high oil temps are the issues. Roller tappet cams with good quality parts are a big plus for marine engines.

My manual calls for 3850559 which crosses to wix 51061, what I found mounted was a sierra 18-7824-2, no clue why that was put on. View attachment 390353View attachment 390354
because sierra is a common aftermarket marine parts supplier and that's what was locally available ...

The 5.0 is a small block chevy ... the two filters long and short that Scott references or any aftermarket cross equivalent ( that means there are probably 50-60 different filter part numbers that will fit).

What oil you use is the bottom of a bottomless pit. lots of guys use rotella. I personally use Mobil one 15-50. Have used it interchangebly with quicksliver and other marine 25w-40, rotlella 15-40 and super tech 15-40 and 20-50. Bottom line use a good quality oil and change it annually you will be fine.

Any 15w40 would likely do. But perhaps the preference might be a marine designed version. There is a specified range of oils you could use in the manual. Funnily enough, the identical engine in mercury form states 25w40 (because they happen to have a quicksilver brand for sale). I use rock oil 10 or 15w-40 mostly.

Prior to that post I was having trouble with the getting the sierra site to show my engine, but putting in GXI yields results and shows the 18-7824-2 part as the correct one for my motor. I bought the longer wix 51061 and will install when I do the oil.
