My name is Steve
I recently aquired a 15'2" Geneva fiberglass boat with a 40 hp Johnson on it. I want to save the old girl but I need some advice and have a few questions. First of all I will tell you what I do know

1. The boat and motor are some where from the late fifties or early sixties not sure which.I cannot find anything on a Geneva boat on line .The boat was built in Hudson Michigan.

2. She looks her age on the outside alot of stress cracks through the deck and chines.

3. There has been some rudimentry repiir on the hull but it needs to be redone or at least renforced. These must have been low budget boats you can see glass mat through the gelcoat on almost every surface of the boat.

The inside of the boat looks great even the bench seat up front is still intact.

My first question to keep the cost down what is the best approch to repair all of the above?

A. Rematte the entire boat.

b .Gelcoat the entire boat bottom sides and top.

c. Fix the internal structure to cure the cause of the stress cracks. If you don't do this they will come back. Then you can either fill the cracks with marine-tex or a gelcoat repair kit, and paint the hull.

If you're looking for an economical solution, re-glassing isn't it. You'd have to clean and prep the existing surface, apply the mat/surfacing veil (with the boat upside down) then putty and fair the hull to smooth. Not cheap or quick.

If the boat's cheaply constructed as you say, I'd recommend just giving the cracks a light sanding, fill with marine-tex if they're big enough to need it, and maybe paint with an inexpensive marine paint like rust-oleum.

Frist welcome . there are some of the greatest people on earth here !!! we are all here to help all we can !!!!!

I agree with erikgreen , that is the cheapest way out , if there a lot of stress cracks your going to have to big deeper , if you got to do the stringers and the transom poly is the way to go , epoxy is to expencive !! have you really looked at the transom ? and the stringers ??

motor sounds cool , I have a 1953 evenrude 15 hp and a 100 hp 1962 merc, can you get some pics posted ?? ok keep us post on how your going !!! and again welcome !! John

my advice is........DONT DO IT ! :D

fix your gellcoat and paint the boat......gellcoat reapirs are a snap....but an entire re gellcoat is a killer......
