recifier 1981 70hp

my rectifier melted, along with the two yellow-red wires going up to the stator. Any idea what caused this? Can I still start and run the motor without it?

Maybe someone hooked up the battery backwards; even for a moment?

You have Alternator Driven Ignition. Your battery won't charge but it should start and run with the rectifier dis-connected.

I'm going to replace the rectifier, but I'll need to pop the flywheel. I don't have the tool. I guess I'll have to rope start it in the mean time, right?

Pop the flywheel? Are you going to replace the stator as well?

You should still be able to use your starter. Just charge your battery beforehand and keep in mind that the engine is not going to be keeping it charged while you are under-way.

If you are going to remove the flywheel, the only tool that will do it without possible damage is the tool that threads into the flywheel and then applies pressure to the crankshaft. Avoid any of those harmonic balancer type of pullers.
