When it comes to putting a transom in a fiberglass boat for me its easy, but when putting one in my aluminum boat is a whole different road.
Normally on a FG boat you glass in the plywood.
Well this is what I'm planning on doing on my aluminum boat.
The original transom is small and doesn't go across the whole stern. It is a 1 1/4 inch thick.
I plan on putting two (3/4 inch) pieces of plywood sandwiched together with gorilla glue. Making it 1 1/2inch thick
I plan on painting it with Rustoleum boat paint (color: Battleship Grey).
When all dry I'm putting some sealer around the drilled holes so no water leaks in. Using stainless steel bolts, nuts, washers, etc..
That's what I plan on doing if anyone has any suggestions leave a reply.
Thanks in advanced.

Sounds about right. 3M 4200 is a real good Marine Sealant. Don't use PT plywood, Stainless Hardware is what's recommended. Aruaco plywood is some good stuff with minimal voids. MDO is also some really good stuff for transoms. Pay attention to the edges that's where the water penetration usually starts. You really want to seal them well.

No pressure treated. I'm using regular plywood not Marine stuff... Special order so it's gonna cost a fortune. That's why I'm gonna use the epoxy paint. The sealers is for around the bolt holes.

Will post pics a little later...
Now the transom I'm installing is on the exterior of the boat is partially exposed to the water (saltwater). Should I be concerned about rot?

Absolutely, that's why I stated pay close attention to the edges. That's where water will try to penetrate first. Since it's on the outside, I'd Highly recommend you use epoxy to seal the wood. It's your best bet against water penetration. If you seal it first and then Paint with Oil based Paint, it'll last for a LONG time.
