I don't have anyone here to help me at the moment, but I jumped the terminals on the slave solenoid and got the same result. Click click crank

Just want to post an update. I replaced the starter with a new Wilson permanent magnet starter, problem solved. It cranks like a boss! I love how much faster it cranks, just touch the starter and she fires upđź‘Ť

When you say PM starter is that the same as the original starter?
I have a mariner/mercury engine and took the starter apart, cleaned the contacts and grease up,. Noticed this one to have rounded magnets inside the case .
I'm debating rebuilt or replace. I see the armature and brushes don't seem that expensive . If the magnet is fine then it should be good to replace those items and work?

PM is Permanent Magnet type. The PM starters are smaller but have high torque output

To close out my comments. I ended up taking the starter to a rebuild shop and they exchanged the starter for another rebuilt starter for $160CAD.
DG Auto Electric in Etobicoke. Gave a 6 month warranty.

Popped it in and bang. Works like a charm.

I am so curious to know what was wrong with my unit as the brushes are cheap $30-40cad.

I hate to give in like that but, now its working and cranking away.

If it was clicking several times before starting: When the solenoid is activated, there is a copper washer in the solenoid that makes contact between the back of the large terminal (with the battery cable) and the terminal for the motor. There is a huge current draw and the washer, over time will become burnt and pitted (due to arching) and will no longer make good contact. In the old days we used to take the solenoid apart file the contacts and flip the washer over to give fresh contact surfaces. The old guys here remember. Right bondo?

Ayuh,.... Been there, done that, probably 1/2 a century ago,....

Most of the electrical problems We have with our boats are caused by corrosion,....

Once All the connections are clean, 'n tight, then the real diagnosis can begin,...

'n many times folks change out a solenoid, 'n the problem is solved, but in reality, just removin', 'n reattachin' the connections is what was truly needed,....

AllDodge,
"That one will work but I would stay away from Sierra (junk), and go with API 10099HD at $178 and can probably find it cheaper"

I wanted to say "thanks!" for your recommendation for OMC starter from API. My boat needed a new starter... so I started reading through some searches and read your post. I was a little reluctant to wait for delivery from Florida to Arizona... but I trusted what you said. I'm so glad I did... this starter runs so much better than what I was use to with my OEM starter.

Big shout out for API 10099HD starter! This is the best purchase I've done for my boat in a long time.

Thanks! Danny

Picture of my box opening... it runs so smooth and effortless starts!
