i just talked to a salesman at a reputable fiberglass supply distributor and he told me that i could not use polyester resin to attach my new stringers to the existing fiberglass hull he said it would not hold or bond very well is this true he was telling me i had to use epoxy resin to get a good strong bond. he said i could use polyester resin to seal and wrap the new stringers with fiberglass, but i had to use epoxy to attach them to the hull to get a good strong bond????? is this true or is he trying to sell me the more expensive material????? PLEASE HELP.........Mike

Epoxy does provide a better bond than poly resin. However most, if not all, of the experienced fiberglass guys will tell you if you use the correct techniques poly resin will work just fine. (that's what was used to install them originally)

Hay Mike , look at what ooops is doing , he is useing resin, Now i was told pertty much the same thing as you , that and i have worked with epoxy before and i know that stuff will stick to just about anyrhing and i mean stick !! and that is also a chemical bond , now the resin for what my take on it is that there is some what of a chemical bond and some what of a mechinal bond with all the grinding you have to do , but both will work , I am going to use epoxy on mine because I trust it , so it up to you , John

Poly is just fine to use... I've never had any problem getting it to stick. If anything, it sticks too well. Just make sure you get a good poly resin and not the cheap stuff. I bought mine from fiberglasssite.com and have been pleased as puddin' with it. Others have had good luck with uscomposits.com.

Re: really confused now....HELP !!!!!!!

Epoxy curing chemistry reacts / forms new chemical bonds with the existing polyester resin used to bond glass and so gives better adhesion overall. Polyester resin curing chemistry desn't provide a route of actually reacting with the existing polyester resin. That being said, as long as you use good surface prep, there's no reason that excellent physical bonding characteristics of polyester resin won't adhere more than adequately to the existing glass / resin. Just rough it up and make sure it's good and clean and it'll stick just fine. imho of course...
