Re-installing lower unit 5hp merc '03, 2cycle

I am looking for tips on getting the drive shaft spline to match up with the power head to re-install the lower unit after impeller replacement. I have tried twisting, turning, tapping, and lubricating and it still won't fit in. Any ideas welcome. Thanks, Malcolm.

Maybe turning the flywheel will help align it.
