1958 Johnson 35hp RDS-20: My question is when re-assembling the water pump do you put sealer under the pump base plate and on the bottom lip of the pump housing? My manual says to put sealer on the upper edge of the lower unit, but the illustrations are not clear. Does sealer also go between the upper unit and the lower unit?

The important areas to seal is between the plate and the lower unit, and the impeller housing and the plate.<br /><br />You can also apply sealer between the lower unit and the exhaust housing (the long housing between the powerhead and the lower unit) but it is not necessary.

I just rebuilt the water pump on a 4 HP Johnson. The instructions said to coat both sides of both gasgets.

Joey.... Yep, if a gasket is involved, that's the procedure.
