Rant about wife's family

I just have to type this out, so bear with me. There isn't anything anyone can do, I just need to vent.

My wife has two cousins that are more like her sisters, than her actual sister is. (Whole OTHER rant there, someday! ;) )
We had made an agreement to sell the younger one our 99 Montana van, ON PAYMENTS of $200/month, for a total of $1500. Now the other cousin talked to her ex-boyfriend, a car salesman, and he tells her the van isn't worth it. He's never even seen the van. Told her that, "they all have gasket issues." So she tells her little sister not to buy our van, cause we are cheating her.
She also piled this on to a request we had to lower the amount we pay her for watching our two boys (ages 7 and 2) for 2.5 hrs, three days a week, from $100 to $75. I felt it was too much for my wife to pay her 50% of her weekly salary to her cousin. (Plus my wife paid her for two days that we ended up not needing her) So they agreed to $75.

So now that's a problem too.

In the past, I have changed flat tires, repaired flat tires, done front disc brake jobs, changed batteries, and other countless auto projects for both these girls, and their mother. My wife cuts the older one's hair, does her nails, tweezes her eyebrows, and other stuff.

But now I am going to cheat her over a $1500 van, that I am taking payments on? What a jerk.

So now I'll advertise my 99 Montana locally, and get at least $1500 for it, all at one time.

The nerve of some people.

Rant over, thanks for reading. Have a great day. I feel a little better.

You will feel better selling the van and not having to worry later when the payments never happen either.

And you also know you would still be working on that van because then you would be obligated to do it. Way better doing what you are doing.

Or when it breaks down a year from now and it is your fault because you should have known it was going to break down a year from now. This way you don't have to hear the grief about not fixing it for her then.

Is the rant more at the boyfriend or the cousin? Regardless, as previously stated, loan payments with relatives seldom result in a favorable outcome. Be happy the stuff hit the fan now and you're out of the car business.

She is doing you a favor not wanting the van, sell it and be happy knowing your never going to be on the hook when it breaks down.

I hear you I really do, sometimes it sucks being the family wrench, your always on call and they are never happy until they go have it done by a "PRO" and then when they see the price they flip out, but thats when you have them, now you can be to busy!!

And when you get a chance remember to thank the boyfriend, because now you have more time to spend on your boat with your kids.

As for the wife....let her fight her own family battles, you can't win those....EVER!!

Re: Rant about wife's family

There is absolutely no lower form of "life" than a 3rd Baseman. Not the real type of 3rd basemen, but the one that's always rearing his idiotic head into other folks' transactions. Any time I've ever done any time of deal and heard someone say, "I was talking to my (fill in the blank)..." I stop the person right there and say, "Enough said, give me back my (fill in the blank)". No sense even trying to justify anything or argue the point. Now, when she goes out and really gets taken advantage of, you get to sit back and just watch. When she asks for help for whatever problem the vehicle she ends up purchasing has, and you know it will have one, you get to say, "Sorry, but I'd probably just screw you over so take it somewhere else."

I'm like you, and I HATE someone to question my integrity. Nothing more insulting in my eyes.

I am so glad to hear that here ex-boyfriend is now taking care of her and her sister, and providing them with a car.

put it in craigslist for $2300, someone will offer you $1800.

take the extra $300 and find a high-school girl that wants to baby sit for $20 per day.

Just my $0.02

Life Rule #7

Never do buisiness / money with relatives.

Agree 100%.

I am the one who can fix anything, and can work on cars... and the sap who does... for free, cause you try and help someone else out, who in return does absolutely nothing for you in return.

Do yourself a huge favor and sell your car to someone else outside and don't think twice!!

Good chance you wouldn't have received all the payments for the $1500 anyway. Would've created a whole other family tiff. Best to let it go, sell yours for lump cash no payments, and do so before what they buy craps out and you get guilted into loaning the van...Vicious circle potential.

Good luck on this, and good luck with the closer than sister thing too....

That's probably what's going to happen. Well, maybe not the "high school girl" part, I was thinking more like my "awesome, grandparent-type, neighbors"! :)

Yeah, I didn't want to do a payment plan with her cousin, cause real money and family don't usually mix well. But my wife insisted, so there wasn't anything I could do. I did tell her that when her cousin defaulted, it was my wife that would have to go get the van, not me!

To the cousins and their families' credit, they haven't ever complained about any repair/maintenance jobs I have done for them.

Yeah, I wanted my wife to say to her cousin, "Well, since your 'Ex' is the expert, I am sure he'll provide her with a completely perfect $1500 car." Which we all know wasn't going to happen.

Thanks for listening!

(Oh, my wife tells me her cousin that's crying about $25/week just got evicted from her house. 5-6 months behind on rent. My wife thinks that's why she was so concerned with the price decrease. I said, "Hunny, she's $3500 behind on rent, our $25/wk isn't going to help her very much!")

Umm, hate to tell ya, but they're going to use the van to move in with you. Babysitting problem solved, payment collection is easier, and you'll always know where the van is in case they fall behind. So what's the problem? :)

Wow....$3500 behind? How much is her rent? Sounds like she had some mighty flexible landlords ALSO trying to "help her out".

$650/mo rent, times 5 months not paid for sure. Landlord never even asked her about not paying the rent. Smart guy, he just began the evictition proceedings, and was successful. Which is HARD to do in this area.
