I know this doesnt really have a lot to do with boats but I figure someone here will be able to answer my question!

I am buying this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007GB96Y2/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I plan on using this on the ocean and want a way to make sure it stays in one place and I don't end up 10 miles down the beach. A friend of mine has a 5lb kayak anchor and I was just curious if yall think that would work. If not, what is a better solution?

I appreciate yalls help even though its not really about boats!

Thanks

Re: Random Anchor Question

I don't think a 5lb kayak anchor will do it, if you're talking about the beach as I know it.I'm picturing an ocean with waves. I don't think theres any way that device would work well in the ocean. Beach at the lake, yeah! with about a 15lb mushroom anchor.

Re: Random Anchor Question

Welcome to iboats, oneeightyd0wn. You'll find lots of helpful folks here.

The wind, current and wave action are all going to affect your anchoring needs and a mushroom (no matter its weight) won't cut it. You're going to need a fluke-style with some chain to get it to set the flukes into the sand and hold. Good Luck

Re: Random Anchor Question

I think a basic mushroom will be fine. it's not a boat, it's a float toy that will be used just outside the breakers. Any further would be dangerous. it would also be dangerous to use it with an offshore wind and to count on ANY anchor for safety.

I know from a lifetime on the beach that many people get in serious trouble when their floats flip, or they fall off, and it blows away--they are surprisingly fast. A sea anchor would be great for that reason, and they don't weigh anything. Also it's a good idea to trail a 50' line with a float at the end so you can catch it if it does get away from you.

Non swimmers should never go on one of those--they create a false sense of security. And on a float like that, people on it CANNOT paddle it to rescue someone who fell off.
