Ran the prop aground

I have a Mercruiser 470 and ran the prop aground in the shallows today. Of course the prop is a bit bent and will have to be replaced. I put the engine in forward gear and reverse and spun the prop by hand. Normally it should not spin. I also checked the main shaft from the engine into the transom and it is spinning with the engine running. I thought maybe I blew the prop but I think it something in the transom.

And ideas what I should look for before have my marina pull the boat with most likely a very expensive repair bill. Is there something that normally breaks when you run the prop and transom aground.

Thanks in advance folks.

Bob.

Re: Ran the prop aground

After the bottom attached your prop, did you run the engine and put it in fwd. and rev. to see if it would work? did it overheat? any new noises, or water leaks? did anything seem different?
You may have nothing more that a damaged prop hub. Put on another prop and see how it acts before pulling the boat.

Re: Ran the prop aground

No new noises, no water leaks and it doesn't overheat. I don't think it is a damaged prop hub only because with the engine off and the shifter in gear either in forward or reverse I can spin the prop freely. Normally when I have the boat in gear the prop is almost impossible to rotate by hand. I know the pump in the transom is working becuase I can see water coming out of it. Could I have sheared the prop hub that it would spin that freely with the boat in gear?
