Cobalt builds a great boat. I agree with a previous poster. You can find out about the stringers by calling Cobalt.

If you like it, it passes a sea trial, then go for it...

That soft deck is what is weighing on my mind. I would hate to get this thing home and it needs everything. I just want to make sure I am buying it right just in case this goes south.

I would feel better at $5000 but I was hoping for less. $5700 just seams a little high.

Am I crazy?

BTW. Thanks for putting up with my rants. I have to really think things through.

Yes crazy in a good MBS kinda way! :D (multiple boat syndrome) You did such a great job on the Glastron bro! Even if you need to replace the deck, and you pay $5k for the boat. When it's done, you're gonna have a killer Cobalt ! If it bothers you this much, another Cobalt will find you!!!!!!!

You mentioned that you've seen 5 to 7 grand for boats that don't need any work. If you value this boat at the high end in pristine condition, then why not just subtract what you think would be the cost to bring it up to perfect? I would think that would get you in the ballpark. Or you could ask the seller what he thought the price of professional deck replacement would be and then subtract that from the price.

Re: Raising the "NEED HELP" Flag. Looking at a boat, and need advise

After following further posts I suggest offering less for the boat than $5000.
I purchased last winter a 1995 wellcraft martinique 3600 for under $20k (needing deck recoring and new headliner new canvass $7k my cost) this boat usially sells for 50 to 90k. When buing a boat for restoration I at least doubble my repair estimates and deduct it ftrom the median boat value. There are more boats than buyers these days and people who need to sell will sell at a great loss to get quick cash. If you cant end up with a boat you cant sell for more than you paid for it why put your time and money on the line. I also have restored many boats for myself and others and plan to trade my way up to a larger full time live aboard yachat someday.

Re: Raising the "NEED HELP" Flag. Looking at a boat, and need advise

Well I think we can put this thread to rest. I went out with the family this morning to take another look and to do a sea trial. I went over this thing with a fine tooth comb and found out what I did not want to see. The stringers and motor mounts are mush!!!!! The port side mount has pulled away from the hull and the bolts pull out without a wrench. When I mentioned this to the seller, he said "I noticed that the other day". WHAT??????? And you are going to try and pawn this off as a lake ready boat. His response, "Somebody will buy it". People like that should be put in jail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No I am not afraid of buying a boat that needs this work, but the price needs to come WAY down. That is where it ends, he is not budging on his price.

The bad thing is that my wife fell in love with it, so I guess I will be "officially" looking for a larger boat.

What we liked is that it had a HUGE beam @ 100" where is the Glastron is @80". It had a super deep hull and just felt so much bigger than it is. I am so disappointed.

Thanks to everyone for their input.

Re: Raising the "NEED HELP" Flag. Looking at a boat, and need advise UPDATED

I went from a 19.5' wellcraft with an 80" beam to a 21' Chaparral with a 96" beam and that beam difference makes all the difference in the world, I would guess the Cobalt is a 96" beam as well as that is the max width of a trailer-able boat without a lot of headache in most states. The new boat feels twice as big as the old one and it is all about beam since it is only a few feet longer and most of that difference is in the swim platform. I would hope that whoever looks at that boat, gets a survey done, otherwise they are in for a big surprise. I would tell the guy, look it is going to take 2 grand in materials plus a lot of labor to make that boat right again, and tell him to call you when he is ready to sell if for 4K or so. I did a quick search on boat trader and that boat is actually a pretty good deal if it wasn't for the stringer issues. Like I said before, if you are set on an older Cobalt, they can be hard to find.

It turns out he is a dealer (small time) and has this boat on consignment. After I calmed down I told him that I was still interested if the price came way down. I think I would be a buyer in the 3500 to 4000 range. Then the work starts all over again.

Frisco just take a laptop with you and show him what it took you to get the glastron right (or maybe oops's thread and he'll feel sorry for you!!!!!!!!!!! ) and go from there the sight of cash always prevails! Good luck

Thats too bad, I am guessing if the owner knew the facts they would gladly take 4K.

I have to get him to come off the $5700 first. He still thinks it is worth that much in its rotten state.

Actually, most boats from 20 - 28 ft. are 102" (8'6") beam as that is max width for non-permit loads in the Sates . . . ;)

Just start looking around for for other boats. And be prepaired to move quickly when you find a boat without structureal issues for the right price.
Many boats are sold below wholesale with fading, other cosmetic or mechanical issues. These are the easiest to turn into equity. :D

I was ready to move on this one, but at that price, I had to pull back after finding th the issues. I have yet to hear back from him about my counter offer.

I think your offer is more fair. As nice as a boat as that is (it is REALLY nice) you just don't pay $5k for a glasser with rot. Your offer is in-line with what the powerplant + trailer + the nice interior pieces are really worth.

He came back to me with $5500.00. He also said "someone will buy it". Which means to me, "I will sell it to some sucker". I just wish there was a way to report this guy. So I gave him my offer back (no where near the $5500) so we will see if he is an honest man.

I do have a boat problem. After sitting in that "Huge" hull I need to find a large boat.

I will be actively looking for a new project now. I just need to decide what to do with the Glastron. I am not sure I can part with her.

I just saw this guy posted it again on Craigs list, and says that it is in great condition. What a joke!!!! I just wish I could turn him in.
