Rack n pinion steering question with the hard steering.

HI again,
I was looking under the dash at the rack , and as I tried to move the wheel, it made me wonder? would it be possible that the splines in the rack might be worn down, and so it does not grip as well, and that would cause the hard steering? If so, can one just replace the rack and pinion and use the same cable? Or should it all be replaced.

thanks

The quickest way to find the cause of tight steering is to disconnect the drag link at the motor.

My brother did that already , and the engine moved freely.. I was just wondering whether just the rack and pinion could be trouble (ie, the spine be worn down on the rack and not the wheel not gripping well) , and just replace them. Or would the whole cable need replacing.

And entire new system can be had for like $120. Why mess with it?
