Quick question on trawlers/workboats?

Hello I'm new to the forum so I'll try to make this quick and painless as possible. d:)

I was at Eastern Shore in MD and was admiring the boats at one of the docks and I came across a powerboat that had a small sail at the rear (I believe they call it a mizzen).

My question is what is it for? It seems to me that it would not produce any noticeable thrust on a workboat. Also, it seems to be placed far behind the center of gyration of the ship and would only aid in keeping the ship faced into the wind, sort of like a rudder.

Thanks.
