I am a cadet. How does one advance up the ranks. I've noticed certain people have different ranks and was just curious how they got them.

How do you move up the ranks? By padding your post count, just like this.

Note the difference in average posts per day between myself and some other's above, like NBE. See, NBE actually waits until he has something meaningful to contribute before posting. Me on the other hand, I just spout off about anything and everything.
