Question about steering...with pics!!!

Hey all. I just picked up a project boat that originally came with a Chrysler outboard, but I bought it less motor and will be putting my own Mercury outboard on it. My question is in regards to the steering system installed on the boat. It is in good shape(moves smooth and free) but the connection at the motor end is different than what my motor will accept. Is there some sort of an adapter available that can be purchased to make this work? I've included some pics(hopefully they show up) to show what I'm talking about.

I hate Photobucket. It's so cluttered.

There may be an adapter for the steering, or a new cable to fit your controls. Id look in the parts sections and see what you can find.

Yeah, I'm trying to keep cost to a minimum so I really don't want to replace the cable if I don't have to. I've been looking online for an adapter and so far have not been able to find one. I wonder how difficult it would be to fabricate one. Probably not too hard.

Sorry, I guess I didn't explain well enough. The links to the photos in my original post are of the steering cable that is currently installed on the boat. The motor I will be installing is a 77 Mercury outboard which takes a steering link type of connection for the steering. That connection requires a hole at the end of the steering cable where one end of the link bolts into the cable and the other end bolts to the motor. The cable in the boat, as you can see from the pictures, does not have the hole required to bolt the link to, so it's a matter of either drilling a hole in end of the cable, but there's not a whole bunch of meat there and I'm afraid the hole needed would be too large for the diameter of the cable end. So, I was hoping for an adapter that would thread on to the end of the cable and provide an eyelet of sorts where the steering link can be bolted to..
