Question about raw water strainer

Hi Guys:

I don't think my boat had a raw water strainer originally, but I'm thinking I should install one as part of my diesel re-power project. My question is: where should it go? Between the seacock and the pump inlet? Or between the raw water pump outlet and all the stuff it's cooling?

I'm used to industrial equipment where a filter always goes downstream of the pump, never on the suction side. But I don't know if that's correct for a seawater strainer.

Can anyone give me some advice on this?

Thanks!

Re: Question about raw water strainer

My Volvo Penta strainer is after the pump before the heat exchanger.

Re: Question about raw water strainer

in general all the strainers i've seen were before pump on suction side and filters downstream on system (hydraulic & swimming pools) a strainer has less resistance to flow allowing it to be placed before pump to protect pump from large debris and not cause suction hose collapse unless strainer is packed full of debris suction hose collapse will occur recommend flow monitor or alarm on system
