If you are mechanically inclined you could get the manuals and diagnose the problem yourself. It could be as simple as a spun coupler or as bad as all the gears are trashed. You need to check the engine, too. If you are not mechanically inclined you could pay a mechanic to diagnose it and give you a quote on fixing it. Or you could buy a new Merc outdrive, or a used Merc outdrive (be careful), or a new non-Merc outdrive. If you can confirm the outdrive is shot, price the boat, price the new outdrive of your choice, knock down the price accordingly including your hassle and risk factor, and make him an offer... if you want the boat and the hassle. I would think in this economy there should be lots of working boats available.
