Re: Question about hauling small boat out of the water

Well, just doing the math - boat weighs 100lbs and the motor weighs 100lbs. Unless those rear rings are on the backside of the transom (and they are not) then there is little chance that they are forward of the center point for the weight.

Re: Question about hauling small boat out of the water

All,

Thanks again for all the replies. If I did not give enough information, here is everything that I know:

The boat is 10' long x 5' wide
The boat weighs about 100 pounds
The motor is a 15HP Mercury, 4 stroke which weighs 112pounds (This is listed on the engine as 50.9kg)

Here is a picture of the inside and the location of the attachments.

As you can see from the picture, there is one attachment in the bow and two in the stern. The two in the stern are in front of the transom by about 6 - 8".

Based on your responses, here are the things I am going to try.

1. Adjust the length of the wires. I will try to shorten the two wires on the stern and lengthen the wire on the bow. For the test, I will probably just use braided rope and then cut the wires to length.
2. If #1 does not work, I am going to get some type of sling for the engine. I will leave the engine attached to the boat as I raise and lower it. Based on what you have said, this should work. I am listing this as option 2 as option 1 simply requires that I adjust the wires.
3. Option 3 is to use some type of engine eye or bolts that attach to the engine. I am not too keen with this idea as you have to remove the engine cover.

Thanks, Bill

You need to find the center of gravity. try picking up the boat and motor just off the ground by just the two rear factory rings and see where the center of gravity is. if it still falls to the back then you need to move the rear lifting rings further back. if it falls toward the front then shorten/lengthen the lines all around accordingly. You 212lbs is not much weight and you can use rope.
Just a little trial and error as someone mentioned.

It's simple....

for your lifting system to work you need to have your lines behind your center of gravity. If the boat points straight up (or close to it) with the current set up then adjusting your cables isn't going to do a thing....

You need to get your (2) rear cables behind your center of gravity, which as said before is probably right in front of the transom. How you get the line to hook up is your choice. Hooking up to the motor would work fine. Heck you could probably just tie to your transom clamps....

Your motor MAY have lift point under the cover (on the top), it'll be a steel hook/ loop. but I'm not sure if a motor that small would have one. As said before, that would be a good place to tie to...

Since your factory lift points are in the belly I think the best/easiest option would be to get a 3-4 foot synthetic sling to go around the outboard and a comealong to make your tripod.
Begin to lift and adjust the comealongs tension to keep the boat level.
