To all of you fellow Q7i owners...

What size anchor do you use? Do you have any issues with it fitting into the anchor storage compartment at the bow?

Re: Q7i Anchor?

Mine is a SF model and that is one of the things you lose (anchor compartment) when going to the SF. I use a slip ring (makes it easier to get up once it digs in) danforth style 15 lbs anchor. I have about 4 feet of anchor chain and then 50' of 1/2" double braided nylon anchor line. When I anchor, it is in 10-15 feet of water, and I haven't had any problems with the anchor holding. But of course a lot depends on the bottom you will be anchoring in, sand and mud are easier than rock.

Have you had any issues with the sharper edges on that style anchor? I am actually considering that same or very similar anchor...I will be in much deeper lake water with a sand/mud bottom.

Re: Q7i Anchor?

Not as of yet. I bought the coated one. It holds fine and the coating helps protect the boat. Plus I have it in a large heavy duty canvas bag.

For your length of anchor line, you would want to go with about a 7:1 to a 10:1 ratio. So if you plan on anchoring in 30 feet of water, you want about 210-300 feet of anchor line. Seems like a lot, but you want the anchor to lay out in front of you instead of the line tending almost straight up and down.

I have the same anchor and store it in one of the console storages. The bow storage is way too small and useless. I only use it to store my mooring ropes. I thinking of getting a smaller anchor to fit that bow area to keep my boat from turning in wind or currents.

210-300 ft. of rope is a lot. I use 100 ft of braided anchor line which I only use maybe half of. Anything longer than that, you'll need to spool it to keep it from getting tangled. Bama, how deep you want to anchor?

Re: Q7i Anchor?

I've always heard that you wanted your anchor line to be 3 times the depth of the water you are anchoring in. 10:1 seems like a lot. If I am anchoring in 30ft of water, that would put me a football field away from my anchor...

I have that exact anchor and also have the anchor chain attached to 100' of braided nylon anchor line. I store it in the center compartment of my Q7i with no problems. I do not have the coated anchor because it was quite a bit more in price at the time. It works great and holds the boat in place for met of the areas we fish in. Mine is not a SF model however.

three to one is rule of thumb. bad weather is five to one.

Re: Q7i Anchor?

When you say "anchor storage" are you talking about the storage under the seats in the bow or is there another place that is just for an anchor. I keep mine in the ski locker. Same style you all are talking about I think mine is 15#. It came with my first boat and it has always worked great. I think it has a lot to do with the length of rope, if it is to short it will never hold. I have 100' of rope.

Re: Q7i Anchor?

Whitey, in my Q7 there is a storage locker in the bow (there is space right behind the forward ladder to place a danforth-type anchor). I too am using a 15lb. danforth with 6' of chain and 100' of braided anchor cable. We typically anchor in water that is 5' to 20' deep, so this has worked well for us. I had to trim a little bit off of the side of the anchor to have it fit properly in the storage, but it works great and keeps the anchor from bouncing around.

Re: Q7i Anchor?

My 2011 does not have the anchor storage or the forward ladder. I wish they would of kept that I am sure it is a lot better then having it in the ski locker.

Yeah it is a pain to have it in the ski locker...especially having to take out skis and rope etc. all the time.

Re: Q7i Anchor?

I have a coated Navy anchor and keep it in the compartment (live well?) under the jump seat on my 2011 Q7i. I put a towel in there under it to protech the boat from the anchor banging during trailering to the lakes. That compartment also has less travel than the ones in the bow too. It is a weird compartment though...there is always water in it at rest due to the drain tube exit on the transom being below the waterline at rest. I can only guess that it's a livewell compartment designed in for the SF models. It dind't come with a plug (maybe it should have...do you get one with yours?), and I can't find a standard size plug that will fit in it, but since the anchor stays in there, it really doesn't matter. Maybe I should try the plug from the cooler under the seat and see if it's the same size. If so, maybe mine was missing from my boat initially.
