J15RENM I pulled the starting cord, hear a snap. Cord does not return. I can rewind manually. How to fix?

Those pesky 92 ( and older ) recoils are so fragile compared the 93's and up.

And it's almost always the spring.

If you're lucky, ( and the spring didn't break) it may just need to be re-assembled.

If it did break at either end, and not in the middle, and you're creative enough ... you might be able to re-use it.

No so much fragile, more like they finally got the recoil design right .

The newer ones never break.

The starter on a 93 and newer 15 HP is not much different than the starter on a 1963 model 10 HP.----Except newer housing is plastic.

I agree. This design is much better

Every recoil starter I have ever owned has broken their springs. I have not found any to be more durable than the other.

Guess I'm lucky . I've owned over 40 of the newer ones. Never an issue.

Whenever a motor came in for recoil repairs I would ask if the motor was hard to start.-----Answer was usually ---YES.-----Owners get mad and become violent on recoils.

If the motor won't start, just pull it another 1000 times lol.

Mech friend heated and bent the spring at inner end and reassembled unit so I could re install. Fixed now. Thanks for all replies and videos.

A few years ago, I worked on that motor for a friend. I ended up breaking the starter rope, and just used it in a shorter version. I wonder if I stumbled upon a solution to saving springs. If a motor is properly tuned, it should start in one or two short tugs in my experience. Pulling to the end of the spring probably does little to improve starting, and I think might risk breaking the spring.
