I bought 2 96 johnson 200
Model # j200txedr
# j2000xedr
My research shows they are both clockwise, standard rotation.
I only need one, which one is standard? They came off the same boat so I assume1 is clockwise. And the other counterclockwise, The came without props.

There is no need for one to be counter rotation!!----Neither model number indicates or hints of counter rotation.

With the motor off, pull the plugs, put it in gear...and turn the flywheels clockwise while observing the prop shafts.

To answer your question, clockwise is the default.

I spoke with the previous owner about getting my titles. He says one of them is counter rotation.
Thanks, I will do more research, im installing one next week.
The other options as mentioned before is to pull the cover, pull the plug shift it in foward gear and see which was it turns.
L ast question. Dose the shifter pull foward or backwards to go in foward gear?

96 johnson 200 Model # j200txedr & # j2000xedr

Youโ€™ve got two model numbers there, but one of them is likely a misreadโ€”and neither of them indicates a counter-rotating unit.

๐Ÿ” Correct decoding

1) J200TXEDR

This is a valid 1996 Johnson 200 HP model from Johnson Outboards
  • J = Johnson
  • 200 = 200 HP
  • T = power trim & tilt
  • X = 25" shaft
  • ED = 1996
  • R = revision/version
โœ… Rotation: Standard (right-hand)

2) โ€œJ2000XEDRโ€ โ€” not a valid model

There is no 2000 HP Johnson, so this is almost certainly a misread of:
๐Ÿ‘‰ J200TXEDR (same as above)
or possibly J200CXEDR (if the โ€œTโ€ was actually a โ€œCโ€)

โš ๏ธ Important (your actual question โ€” counter rotation)

  • J200TXEDR โ†’ NOT counter-rotating
  • If it were counter-rotating, you would see something like:
    • J200CXEDR (C = counter rotation)

โœ… What you should do to be 100% sure

Because letters can be misread on old tags:
  1. Re-check the plate carefully (clean it if needed)
  2. Look specifically for:
    • โ€œCโ€ in place of the โ€œTโ€
  3. Or do the physical test:
    • Put in forward gear (engine off)
    • Spin prop:
      • Clockwise โ†’ standard
      • Counter-clockwise โ†’ counter-rotating

๐Ÿง  Bottom line

  • J200TXEDR = standard rotation
  • Your second model number is almost certainly a reading error
  • Only a โ€œCโ€ model would be counter-rotating

And here I thought the letter----N----was for counter rotation in the 96 model year.

Lol, nobody seems to want to answer your question...you pull it forward to get it in gear.

Cheers
